AKB48 received a special award in the 24th Annual "Best Glasses Awards" held on October 11. Although AKB48 does not usually have a glasses-wearing image, they were voted "the celebrities that people most wanted to see wearing glasses."
The 8-member "Megane Senbatsu" composed of the members judged to look the best in glasses included Akimoto Sayaka, Itano Tomomi, Kasai Tomomi, Kitahara Rie, Fujie Rena, Miyazawa Sae, Yokoyama Yui, and Watanabe Mayu. Kasai did not attend the awards ceremony due to poor health.
In receiving the award, Itano told the audience "Although I wear glasses when I am at home, I usually wear contact lenses when I am out. However, to be placed in the 'Megane Senbatsu' makes me very happy!"
She went on to share her views on men who wear glasses, saying "The moment he puts on glasses when he normally doesn't wear them, or vice versa, I think this gap is very cool, very charming."
Miyazawa, who normally does not need glasses, said "I am personally overjoyed to to received this award! Ever since middle school, even though my eyesight is fine, I have insisted my eyes were bad just so that I could wear glasses."
