AKB48 in Shanghai Japan Week 2011

AKB48 was in Shanghai for a handshake event and performance as part of the "Shanghai Japan Week 2011". The handshake event was cancelled unfortunately due to the unexpected number of fans that turned up at the venue, approximately 4000! However tickets were only prepared for just 100 fans.

When the members landed at Shanghai Airport, there were hundreds of fans there to greet them. At least 100 fans even waited at the hotel where the members were staying. On the day of the handshake event, there were a number of fans who camped overnight at the venue. Because of the chaos and concerns about the girls safety, the event was canceled to the disappointment of both the fans and the AKB members.

While this didn't hamper their live concert at the "Shanghai Japan Week 2011" where they performed for 1,300 college students. AKB48 performed free of charge to show their gratitude towards China for their immense aid after the Tohoku earthquake. The live concert was performed by 16 members of AKB including Mayuyu, Sasshi and Takamina.

The three day Japan-China joint cultural event was the first ever in China and there was also performances by other Japanese artists. It included various Japanese cultural programs like tea ceremony and kimono dressing. Both the countries hope to improve their relationship through events like these.
